Identify gastrocnemius medial head
The inner head of the superficial gastrocnemius muscle, behind the knee and upper calf.
Medial refers to the body's midline, not a fixed side of your screen. This selection is one head, not the whole gastrocnemius.

Principal attachments and heel connection
Its proximal attachment is on the femur above the medial condyle.
Distally, gastrocnemius and soleus reach the calcaneus through the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon.
Here, tendon-colored boundaries and separate tendon layers are not modeled. The text describes anatomy beyond the selectable surface.

Ankle action and the knee
Gastrocnemius produces ankle plantar flexion and can assist knee flexion.
Plantar flexion points the foot downward at the ankle. This static viewer does not animate the movement or predict strength, tendon load or range of motion.

Innervation
The tibial nerve supplies the muscle. Its branches and the supplying blood vessels are not present in the current model.

Explore right gastrocnemius medial head in 3D
- Orient the selected structure. Choose Back, inspect the upper end, then restore context to compare the head with the same-side femur.
- Restore this side. Show context restores the existing 31 bones and 21 muscle parts in this leg. Select the calcaneus to inspect the heel; the Achilles tendon is not a separate selectable item.
- Compare the calf layers. The regional lower-leg close-up omits the femur and foot bones, including the heel. This full-leg structure page includes those bones when context is restored. Right calf guides →
BodyParts3D provides this right-sided surface model, not every anatomical variant. Colors distinguish structures; they are not tissue textures.
The other gastrocnemius head is a separate mesh. Use its guide to compare the two; the selected mesh alone is not the complete calf.
Plantaris, nerves, vessels, joint cartilage and separate ligaments are absent. A colored taper is not a detailed model of Achilles subtendons or tendon fascicles.
The left and right guides share general anatomy but open different source-identified meshes. These surfaces do not represent all anatomical variants.
A section tool is not available for this structure. The surface model does not reveal internal tissue architecture or represent a medical scan.

This guide uses independently written explanations with links to the evidence behind them. Source checking and specialist anatomical review are separate steps; the latter is still pending.
